Image of the Week: Celebrate New Vocabulary through a ThingLink Word Cloud

Each year, new words are added to the dictionary. This can be a great opportunity for teachers to present these words to students, gather their predicted definitions and celebrate the new vocabulary through a ThingLink Word Cloud. Our image of the week comes to us from one of our biggest edu-fans, Donna Baumbach.

Donna’s interactive image first has the students submit a guess as to the definition using an embedded Polldaddy. Then, they can hover over a text tag for the actual definition. Her background image is creatively designed featuring the word cloud as well as a ‘key’ showing each of the tags and what the students need to do.

Learning Standards to Support Celebrating New Vocabulary

  • ISTE Standards for Students 2A (Communication & collaboration)
    • Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.5.3.A (Phonics & word recognition)
    • Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.

Join Donna and other educators around the world this summer with the ThingLink Teacher Summer Challenge! This online, self-paced professional development will kick off on June 23, 2017. Don’t delay, Reserve your spot here!
